The Bounty leaves Portsmouth in 1787. Its destination: to sail to Tahiti and load bread-fruit. On the way back to England, officer Fletcher Christian becomes the leader of a mutiny.

On that very same day, Ellen is dropped off in Los Angeles by the Navy, who rescued her from the South Pacific island where she was stranded for the past five years. She asks the Navy not to publicize her rescue nor notify Nicholas as she wants to do so herself.

Burnett, the story is given an 1898 setting. It is the second film adaptation of the novel following 1950's noir classic The Asphalt Jungle.
