Burke Ryan és un autor d'èxit de llibres d'autoajuda que ensenyen com enfrontar-se al dolor. Però en Burke, que és vidu, és incapaç de seguir els seus propis consells. A causa d'unes conferències que ha d'impartir, en Burke torna a Seattle de mala gana, doncs és la ciutat on vivia amb la seva dona.
