Les Mutins de Pangée

Philippe Ginestet, 66, is the owner of the GIFI and TATI chain of stores. With his fortune estimated at 2.3 billion euros, he is the 27th richest Frenchman. But within the closed club of the great French bosses, he is not the only one. Self-made man, French incarnation of the American dream, his management methods are atypical: motivation seminars organized in his luxurious chalet in Megève, poker tournaments between employees, trips to Las Vegas... A corporate culture pushed to the extreme.

Between 1900 and 1920 more than 14 million immigrants arrived in the US, like Howard Zinn's parents. They came fleeing poverty or war, or racism, or religious persecution. They dreamed of a promised land, of wealth, or simply of a better life.

From falsehood to mystification to manipulation and false impartiality, the whole logic of disinformation and brutality is brought to light. When the king of the media and his politico-journalistic buffoons are sifted by a radical counter-audiovisual power, the discredit of the "elites" sanctioned by the referendum of May 29, 2005 is better understood. With this film, Zalea TV's team had decided to laugh about it and make them laugh, even if at bottom these discoveries were rather disturbing. By staging a series of very simple techniques of "self-defense", this film is an invitation to self-disengage permanently. The use of the TV-B Gone, an instrument whose sole function is to turn off the television, appears here as the ultimate resort to media criticism.

The former shepherd, Jean Lassalle, decides to run in the presidential election. Neither one nor two, Pierre Carles and Philippe Lespinasse, two filmmakers labeled left, but a bit politically lost, decide to take action: They proclaim themselves his campaign advisers, with the secret ambition to reveal his true nature, that of an anti capitalist revolutionary, lost among the centrists for 30 years.

At a first glance "Sur les toits" is a film about a prison revolt in the North East of France in the early 1970's. However this film is not about a singular historic incident - it is about you. You think you are free? Well, you are most likely not. Freedom must be fought for every day and this film is a reminder of that ancient fact. Director Nicolas Drolc has understood it is all about making the personal universal. His film is not soley about prison or the correctional system, his film is about raising one's voice and defining one's own fate. In a time where we all think we are so g'damn free "Sur les toits" makes us look back to see what fighting for one's freedom and dignity truly means.
