Franz Jägerstätter (August Diehl) žije se svou ženou a dětmi v Radegundu, rakouské vesnici uprostřed hor. Jeho malý statek je vzdálen všech hrůz druhé světové války. Hitlerovský režim však nelze zastavit, a tak se stane, že i Jagerstätter je roku 1943 povolán do armády. Mladý muž ovšem ve válčení nevidí žádný smysl a nikdy by jiného člověka nezabil. Odmítne proto nastoupit, je zatčen a podroben výslechům a týrání. Místo aby přehodnotil svůj postoj a vyhnul se hrozícímu trestu, vytrvává ve své víře v dobro v každém člověku…

Pietro je chlapec z rušného italského města, Bruno je kluk ze zapomenuté alpské vesnice. Jeden se každé léto vrací do hor s rodiči, druhý kopce nikdy neopouští. Sdílí lásku k majestátním vrcholům, složitý vztah k vlastním otcům a časem i husté plnovousy. Tak jako příroda roste, usychá a znovu vzkvétá, mění se i jejich přátelství. Ztráta v Pietrově životě ho po mnoha letech zavede zpět na venkov a opětovné setkání s Brunem změní jeho pohled na svět.
