Mais cet ivoire provient de mammouths, dont les défenses, les squelettes et les corps parfois gelés se retrouvent régulièrement dans le sol gelé de la Sibérie. Selon les estimations de certains scientifiques, celui-ci pourrait contenir les restes de plusieurs millions de mammouths ! glace éternelle. Leur objectif : découvrir les restes congelés de mammouths piégés dans le pergélisol. Usant de moyens dérisoires, ils creusent le sol gelé dont ils extraient os, dents, crânes… et surtout, de précieuses défenses de mammouth. L'ivoire - l'or blanc de la toundra - se vendra plus de 50 dollars le kilo. Un marché total apparaît à 2,5 millions de dollars, avec des hubs à Moscou et Hong Kong.
