1941. Londres est bombardé par les Allemands. Le jeune William est évacué et placé chez Tom, un veuf grincheux. Dans un village de carte postale, la bienveillance inattendue de Tom et la compagnie de joyeux copains lui font, peu à peu, reprendre goût à la vie.
