Robert i Katherine Thorn čini se da imaju sve. Uživaju u sretnom braku, on je američki veleposlanik u Velikoj Britaniji, no jedina njihova želja je imati djecu. Kada Katherine rodi mrtvorođenče, svećenik joj u bolnici pristupa Robertu i predlaže da usvoje zdravu bebu čija je majka umrla tijekom poroda. Robert, ne obavijestivši svoju suprugu, pristaje.
