1986. április 26-án, kora reggel megkezdődött "A csernobili csata" miután a csernobili atomerőmű négyes számú reaktora felrobbant, és egy lángoszlop emelkedett 750 méter magasra a hajnali ukrán égbolton. A következő nyolc hónapban 800 ezer, a Szovjetunió minden pontjáról érkezett fiatal katona, bányász, tűzoltó és civil dolgozott azon, hogy megszüntesse a radioaktív anyagok környezetbe jutását és egy "szarkofágot" készítsen a megrongálódott reaktor köré, amely visszatartja a további radioaktivitás kikerülését.
