La storia è quella di Ogami Ittō, il più grande e temuto samurai del regno, e del suo figlioletto. Siamo nel Giappone del XVII secolo; Ogami, boia personale dello Shogun, cade in disgrazia a causa di un complotto ordito nei suoi confronti. Sua moglie viene assassinata e si trova costretto a fuggire con suo figlio Diagoro, di soli tre anni.
