De 17-jarige rijke Rose DeWitt Bukater wordt door haar familie gedwongen om zich met Cal Hockley te verloven en binnenkort te gaan trouwen. Tijdens de eerste tocht over de Atlantische zee van de Titanic, een gigantisch passagiersschip dat onzinkbaar wordt geacht, besluit ze zelfmoord te plegen.
De bruiloft van Will Turner en Elizabeth Swann wordt afgelast als beiden gearresteerd worden voor het helpen ontsnappen van Jack Sparrow. Will krijgt de kans zichzelf en zijn verloofde te redden van de strop, door het kompas dat Jack bij zich heeft te overhandigen aan de nieuwe Heer van Port Royal.

Ze worden begeleid door twintig doorgewinterde politiemannen. Na een ontsnappingspoging ontstaat er een rel en weten de criminelen het schip grotendeels over te nemen. Hoewel ze nu vrij zijn, hebben de criminelen geen enkel idee dat ze ook een sinistere kracht hebben ontketend.
De rat Roddy woont in een veilige kooi in de dure wijk van Londen, tot op de dag dat hij door een inbreker door het toilet wordt gespoeld. Hij komt via het riool terecht in een ondergrondse wereld en wil zo snel mogelijk terug naar huis. Hij krijgt hierbij hulp van Rita, die hij heeft beloofd ruim te belonen als zij hem weer thuis weet te krijgen.

De film is gebaseerd op het waargebeurde verhaal van Richard Phillips, kapitein van het cargoschip Maersk Alabama. In 2009 werd dit schip door Somalische piraten gekaapt en Phillips gaf zichzelf op als gijzelaar om zijn crew te redden.
