Радња филма смештеног у источни Берлин 1984. године прати Герда Вислера, искусног службеника државне безбедности, који добија задатак да прислушкује познатог и успешног позоришног писца Георга Дрејмана. Ово дебитантско целовечерње остварење редитеља Флоријана Хенкела фон Донерсмарка имало је рекордних 11 номинација на додели Немачких националних филмских награда, а овенчан је Оскаром за најбољи страни филм 2007. године.
Филм се пре свега бави одрастањем групе момака у анархичним, транзиционим временима у бившој Источној Немачкој, са освртом у њихово социјализмом обојено детињство. Посебна занимљивост овог филма је да не гледамо портрет Берлина, чији је источни део врло брзо прешао на западњачко стање свести, него у Лајпцигу, где је транзиција била и спорија и анархичнија.

When the mayor puts forward the proposal to have a company build a wind farm with dozen of wind turbines in order to secure the prosperity and future of the locals, the open fight for the only possible piece of land begins, which unfortunately belongs to three different owners. Everyone sees big money for themselves. Alliances are formed and friends become enemies. In addition, an unscrupulous vulture capitalism investor from southern Germany interferes that causes the glass to overflow.
