Clint Eastwood och Morgan Freeman spelar här två laglösa som efter att ha haft lite otur bestämmer sig för att greppa sina vapen en sista gång och hjälpa några hämndlystna prostituerade i staden "Big Whiskey". Richard Harris spelar "English Bob", en färgstark lönnmördare. Gene Hackman (som fick en Oscar för bästa manliga biroll) spelar den brutale och sluga sheriffen som med hjälp av sina vicesheriffer håller stan i ett järngrepp. Det blåser upp till storm i Big Whiskey.

The time has come for Redvers Potter to relinquish his role as head of the family confectionary firm, Pottermints - his company has been taken over and he is now going into enforced retirement. His wife, Aileen, is not too happy about having her husband under her feet either, but Potter is determined to make the most of his retirement.
