เรื่องเริ่มในเดือนสิงหาคม 1943 (พ.ศ.2486) ช่วงหัวเลี้ยวหัวต่อสำคัญของอิตาลีในสงครามโลกครั้งที่สอง เมื่อสัมพันธมิตรเริ่มการบุกทางตอนใต้ของประเทศแล้ว ฝ่ายเยอรมันก็ได้เข้ามายึดครองทางเหนือ พระเอกของเรามีนามเต็มว่า พันเอก โจเซฟ แอล. ไรอัน (Colonel Joseph L.
